Don Reviews "Here"

Writer: Rob ErvinRob Ervin

Being that saying known as a fly on the wall is something that has really become a favorite of a lot of people.  From reality shows to competition shows where cameras are around all the time, being able to watch events where no one else knows you are there is one of those things that Hollywood is cranking out a lot.  With a film like Here, this premise is taken from a bit of a different angle.

Robert Zemeckis, most of the story uses a cast of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, and Kelly Reilly.  Using only one camera shot, this is the story of multiple families from the same plot of land throughout the years from the origins of life on Earth until modern day.  Most of the film is based around Al (Bettany) and his wife Rose (Reilly) when they buy the home in the 1950s and their family that shifts to their oldest child Richard (Hanks) and his girlfriend/fiancé/wife Margaret (Wright). The script itself does go back and fourth between different time periods and different owners of the properties while all in the same place.

With veterans like there are in this film, the performances are.  I know this is the start of awards season, and I think they will try to push some of the performances for nominations, but I think the performances do not deserve nominations because there is nothing groundbreaking here. I will give Here its kudos for originality and visuals as it is very apparent how much was put into the CGI and cinematography.

My issue here is that by boasting this as being a reunion of the director and main actors from Forrest Gump, it feels like they wanted to do a kind of reboot of that film with little hints of what may be to come while using a different concept that does not work.  Honestly, the magic just isn’t there. For instance, the house featured in the film is shown to be across the street from that of a historic statesman while one of the prior homeowners of the house this was shot it is the investor of iconic product.  I truly feel that due to the release timing, this film will try to be “Oscar bait”, and while I have no issues it finding some nominations for its visuals or script, I do not feel it should get any other nominations like best director or best picture. Due to some good emotional moments, I will still recommend watching Here on a home cable streaming service.
